Antimicrobial and Physical Properties of Food Rackaging Films Incorporated with Some Natural Compounds
Kim, Dong Man
Hong, Seok In/Park, Jong Dae
Abstract
Some naturally derived compounds such as propolis extract, chitosan polymer and oligomer, and clove extract were incorporated into polyethylene film to form antimicrobial food packaging materials. The compounds were directly incorporated through the master batch process, and the films were fabricated by the blowing extrusion process. Antimicrobial activities of the resulting films against several microorganisms including Lactobacillus plantarum, Escherichia coli, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and Fusarium oxysporum were determined through viable cell counts after each organism, together with the films, were suspended in the buffer solutions. The films exhibited selective antimicrobial effects depending on the species of the microbes tested. The film containing chitosan oligomer showed antagonistic activities against S. cerevisiae, L. plantarum, and F. oxysporum. The impregnation of naturally derived additives with the exception of chitosan polymer did not significantly affect the physical properties of the films.
